OHNS Hardness:
The maximum achievable hardness for OHNS steel is 230 HBW.
OHNS Heat Treatment:
- Soft Annealing: Performed at 750-780°C with furnace cooling. The target hardness after annealing is 230 HBW.
- Stress-Relief Annealing: Conducted at approx. 650°C to relieve internal stresses.
- Hardening: Heat to 780-820°C, then quench in oil, air, or salt bath at 180-220°C, achieving hardness up to 65 HRC.
OHNS Hardening:
Uniformly heat OHNS steel to 780-820°C (1436-1508°F). Preheating at 300-500°C is optional. After heating, quench in oil immediately for maximum hardness.
OHNS Tempering:
Tempering is done at 177-260°C (350-500°F), providing a Rockwell C hardness between 57 and 62 depending on the desired properties.

OHNS Forging Properties:
OHNS steel can be forged between 1038°C (1900°F) and 857°C (1575°F), but forging below 816°C (1550°F) is not recommended to avoid damaging the steel.
OHNS Machinability:
OHNS steel offers 90% machinability relative to water-hardening low alloy steels. Optimal machining parameters include a spindle speed of 1500 RPM, feed rate of 0.06 mm, and a 1 mm depth of cut.
OHNS Welding:
Although weldable, care must be taken to avoid cracking during the welding process. This can be achieved by preheating and using the correct welding techniques. OHNS is typically welded with mild steel electrodes, chromium-based electrodes (E312-16), or nickel-based electrodes (E-NiCrFe-3). All three options perform well in terms of crack resistance and joint strength.
