CW-1 Grade Introduction:

CW-1 is a high-quality, USA AISI tool steel known for its excellent performance in severe conditions. It belongs to the W-Ta-Nb-Ti-Co class of carbide tool steels, and it has been widely accepted and utilized globally in various applications. Our CW-1 steel is available in multiple forms, including round bars, flat bars, forgings, fasteners, tubes, wires, strips, sheets, and plates. This grade is particularly suitable for high-precision auto-lathe processing and various special-shaped turning parts. We ensure rigorous packaging standards to prevent material damage during transportation and offer CW-1 steel in conditions such as quenched and tempered, annealed, and machined semi-finished products.

CW-1 Hardness:

  • Hardness: 335 HB

CW-1 Heat Treatment:

CW-1 Hardening:
Heat treatment should prevent decarburization. Preheat to 1500/1550°F (816/843°C), then heat to 1950-2150°F (1066-1175°C) for 20-30 minutes. For larger sections, fan air cooling or step quenching in oil or salt may be used.

CW-1 Tempering:
Tools should be tempered immediately after hardening. Double temper at 400-750°F (200-400°C) for a minimum of 2 hours each temper. For optimum stress relieving, double temper at 1025°F, but note potential corrosion resistance loss. A refrigeration treatment at -100°F between tempers can be used, followed by at least one temper. The typical hardness after tempering is 56-60 HRC.

CW-1 Forging Properties:
Heat to 2000/2100°F (1093/1149°C). Do not work below 1700°F (927°C). Reheat as necessary, cool slowly, and anneal immediately upon cooling.

CW-1 Normalizing:
Not recommended.

CW-1 Stress Relieving:

  • Annealed Parts: Heat to 1100-1300°F (593-705°C), hold for 2 hours, then cool in still air or furnace.
  • Hardened Parts: Heat to 25-50°F (15-30°C) below original tempering temperature, hold for 2 hours, then cool in still air or furnace.

CW-1 Annealing:
Heat to 1650°F (899°C), hold for 2 hours, and cool slowly at a rate of 25°F (14°C) per hour to 1000°F (538°C). Then cool to room temperature. Typical annealed hardness is 277 Brinell.

CW-1 Density:

  • Density: 8000 kg/m³

CW-1 Machinability:
Machinability is between 35% and 40% of 1% carbon tool steel. CW-1 can be easily EDM’d with proper precautions to prevent and/or remove the “white layer.”

CW-1 Welding:
Welding is not typically recommended due to potential changes in mechanical properties and difficulty in achieving desired weld quality.

CW-1 Physical Properties:

Property Value Unit
Thermal Expansion 16-17 e-6/K
Thermal Conductivity 16 W/m·K
Specific Heat 500 J/kg·K
Melting Temperature 1370-1400 °C
Service Temperature 0-500 °C
Density 8000 kg/m³
Resistivity 0.7 Ohm·mm²/m

CW-1 Thermal Properties:

Property Value Unit Conditions
